There is no better way to explore and understand a city and its culture than through its food. A person can’t fully appreciate Italy without sampling fresh pasta primavera or Japan without at least one bowl of miso soup. So much of who we are as a culture is in the food we love, and Huntsville is no exception.
The Downtown Dish Huntsville Food Tour allows visitors and natives alike to explore the history and food of Huntsville in one fun, delicious tour. It is a 2.5-hour walking tour through the historical downtown area, which visits six unique tasting locations and numerous historical sites. At many of the tasting locations, visitors have the opportunity to meet the chefs and owners, ask questions, and sample some of the best dishes in Huntsville.
The tour is a pleasant 2.5 miles at an easy pace with lots of breaks, but make sure you wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.
Heather and her husband Chris Waye started the tour last September as a way for people to learn the history of the Rocket City, while eating at some of the tastiest food sites in the downtown Huntsville area. The couple had visited other cities with similar tours and knew Huntsville had many great local restaurants to support its own tour.
Though the tours are subject to change, their current tasting locations are: Below the Radar Brewhouse, Kaffeeklatsch, Pane e Vino Pizzeria, Harrison Brother’s Hardware, Big Oh’s, and Sam & Greg’s Pizzeria.
Customers with food allergies can get gluten-free options and there are some accommodations for dairy restrictions. At this time, there are not any vegetarian options.
For only $49, participants can explore several restaurants, specialty shops, and cuisines in addition to learning the stories and lore that make Huntsville such a unique city.
Special tours will take place on August 6th, 13th, and 20th in celebration of Huntsville’s Restaurant Week.
The tours are on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. until almost 2:00 p.m. and are available rain or shine. Gift certificates are also available for the foodie and history buffs in your life.
“Come explore Huntsville’s best kept secrets, learn about our award winning chefs, and taste the highlights of the Rocket City,” said Heather.
